President

A note from Ken ~

Gordon

“I want to thank the Class of 2013 for taking me in like you did in such a short time. You all showed much of what it takes to be successful PT’s this early in your academic career. I have been in the field for over 9 years and have learned about what works, and what doesn’t work so well. The common theme that I noted that moved PT’s and the business forward was TEAM WORK.

This class has demonstrated just that. Everyone has brought something to the table that has made the experience unforgettable. Keep them together Gordon, keep being that glue…Please keep that spirit alive through out your time here and the rest of your careers because it can only support you. A couple of good examples are the car wash & the intramural sports environment. It has been a pleasure and a blessing to have met you all and interacted with most of you. I have learned much as well. God has other plans for me and its time for me to shift gears to keep up with his pace and direction. I am sorry I will not be finishing this race with you all, but know that my spirit is with you all and wish you only the best. I am sure our paths will cross again since the PT world is a small one.
God Bless you all and your families during your journey as PT’s.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”…….Eleanor Roosevelt

Sincerely,
Ken Cabrera PTA ( aspiring PT)” ?

Well it has been a long week and I’m sure that many of us have had a wonderful and awesome time not thinking of school… Or maybe even not thinking at all.  Heck, the reason I’m righting this letter so late is because I’m finally coming to grips that we actually have school again tomorrow.  But even though I’m dreading the schoolwork again I am very excited to see all my friends that I haven’t seen for awhile.
This quarter is shaping up to be a good one though, by the look of what classes we are taking it seems as though we will start moving away from basic sciences and heading more towards PT work which is very welcome.  Also our sports representatives have compiled a list of sports that will be happening this quarter and if you want to participate talk to either Chris or Kay.
A very important thing that is happening this week is our classes 2nd Carwash happening this Friday starting at 10am still in front of nichol hall.   The weather is at the moment supposed to be in the 80’s and sunny this Friday which should make for a fun and lucrative time.  Our last carwash brought in about $840 and I would like to see that number increase.  I bet that if we are able to advertise better and have our FULL class help participate in the carwash that we could hit over $1000.  I am confident that it can happen and I hope you are too.

APTA Representatives

Conferences, Conferences, Conferences!

After attending the CSM conference in New Orleans, I realized that we need to get more students to more conferences this year. The experience I had was so rewarding.  We will be posting a CSM New Orleans re-cap during spring break with all of the highlights, information we learned and pictures. Please keep an eye out for that.

We have a lot of conferences coming up our second year! Please start saving your $$ now for each conference. With the amount of conferences and the response of people already wanting to go, it looks like we will only be able to pay admission to each conference, therefore, transportation, hotel, food etc. will have to be paid for by you. Please keep in mind, we will be doing fundraisers throughout the year to raise additional money for these conferences. These fundraisers can only be a success if we have the participation of the entire class, so please be there to support your class!

2011:

California Conference (Long Beach) – Sept 22 – 23

Student Conclave (Minneapolis, MN)- Oct 21-23

2012:

CSM Conference (Chicago, IL) Feb 8 -11

I am looking forward to planning these events with you! Please contact me with any questions, comments or concerns!

In other news, as President Gordon discussed today, we are creating a logo for DPT class of 2013. Please submit your logo’s via e-mail to alelliott@llu.edu by January 3, 2011. The specifications: JPG or PNG file, dimensions: 956×167. Please contact me should you have any questions.

I have received all of the SI presentations and they have now been uploaded to the “academics” page.  Please go check them out!

Last but not least, we have a physio take home final. As with the previous (2) midterm exams, I have been asked to hold a review time to discuss the answers. With finals at the same time, would Wednesday after our final be a good time to start the test and solidify the answers? I do not know that I will actually get to the exam before that date. Let me know your thoughts ;)

Please comment on the above by clicking the link below. Please feel free to comment on any page, this is used as your forum as well to communicate with your fellow students, do not be shy. Blog, blog, blog!  Once you submit your comment, it is sent for approval before being posted, so please be patient on it showing up on the website.

APTA Representative: Aubin Elliott

I was born and mostly raised in Southern California. I moved for a few short years out of the state to Indiana and Georgia, but always came back to sunny Southern California. I completed my undergraduate degree at California State University, San Bernardino in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a pre-physical therapy concentration. After getting married in June 2008, I decided to complete my education at Loma Linda University because of the great name the school had and I knew I would never be happy unless I completed my dream of being a physical therapist. I love being out doors hiking, running, going to the beach or going to the lake. Life is an adventure, are you ready?

Chaplin: Kayla Anderson
I was born in Ketchikan, Alaska and sent most of my childhood years in the Pacific Northwest. I began my undergraduate career at Union College in Lincoln, NE as an accounting Major. I quickly realized that Accounting was not for me and after some shadowing at a local PT clinic I feel in love with the profession. I transferred to Walla Walla University completed my pre-requisites, found a husband, and got involved with a missions program that landed me in an orphanage caring for children ages infant to three years old in Tanzania Africa for over 7 months. After finishing my time in Africa I came to LLU and as they say the rest is history.  I am excited to serve each of you as we journey through our time together here at Loma Linda.

Sam Willis: Historian

I was born and raised right here in Redlands and went to Loma Linda high school. I then went to Tennessee for college at Southern Adventist University where I got my B.S Biomedical and Chemistry minor. After college I took a year off to do missionary work in South America and it was the best experience of my life. If you’ve never done a missionary project I would definitely recommend doing one, even if it is local in your own city! Im currently in the process of opening up a non-profit organization to help out the children in the rural villages of Argentina that I would help look after. It was in Argentina where I also discovered that I wanted to do Physical Therapy after working in the PT department so I completed my hours and applied to Loma Linda while I was down there. I also became incredibly addicted to traveling, hiking, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities while I was over there. I plan on doing a lot more traveling when I grow up and finish school :D .

I attended La Sierra Academy from kindergarten through senior year.  I graduated from high school in 2004 and attended University of California, Irvine from 2004-2008.  While there, I earned a degree in Political Science with minors in Criminology and History.  From 2008-2009 re-evaluated job market and goals in life, and decided Physical Therapy was the best career for me.  Having done several science pre-requisites at UCI, I finished up PT pre-reqs at Riverside Community College and La Sierra University and applied/got accepted to LLU DPT class of 2013, the best class ever! I am a Riverside native and absolute sports fanatic.  Also, I am a huge fan of the Lakers and Dodgers, as I have been a fan for as long as I can remember.  Hobbies include, but not limited to:  Gym, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Racquetball, Wake boarding, Snowboarding, and of course PHYSICAL THERAPY!!!
